Beowulf is the earliest surviving epic poem in Old English literature, composed between the 8th and 11th centuries. Victorious, he returns home and eventually becomes king of the Geats, ruling wisely for fifty years. In his old age, Beowulf faces his final challenge: a dragon enraged by the theft of its treasure. Though he kills the dragon, he is mortally wounded in the struggle. His people mourn him deeply, honoring his courage and leadership. Blending pagan heroism with Christian reflection, Beowulf explores themes of fate, loyalty, honor, and mortality, standing as a foundational work of English literary tradition.
