The film tells the story of two students: Troy, the captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella, a new student who excels in maths and science. After being thrown together during the summer holidays to sing a karaoke song, the two are surprised to find themselves at the same high school when the term begins. Through a series of accidents, Troy and Gabrielle end up trying out for the lead parts in their school musical. Despite some students' attempts to thwart their dreams, Troy and Gabriella persist and inspire others along the way.
