Severiano Ballesteros nació el 9 de abril de 1957 en el pueblo cántabro de Pedreña. Se convirtió en golfista profesional justo antes de cumplir los diecisiete años y consiguió su primer torneo del Circuito Europeo –el Open de Holanda– en 1976. En 1979 ganó su primer grande, el Open Británico (siendo el jugador más joven en ganarlo en el siglo XX). Al año siguiente se convirtió en el segundo jugador no americano y el primer europeo en ganar el Masters.

Golfista dominante en su época, con 94 victorias como profesional, ganó en 1983 su segundo Masters y en 1984 y 1988 dos Opens Británicos más. Consiguió en seis ocasiones la Orden de Mérito Europea (1976, 1977, 1978, 1986, 1988 y 1991) y cinco victorias en el World Match Play Championship (1981, 1982, 1984, 1985 y 1991). Considerado como uno de los mejores jugadores de match play de la historia, ganó la Ryder Cup como jugador en tres ediciones (1985, 1987 y 1995) y en 1997 como Capitán del Equipo Europeo.

Entre los numerosos premios, condecoraciones y distinciones que le han otorgado a lo largo de su carrera, tanto en España como en el resto del mundo, destaca el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de los Deportes en 1989. En julio de 2007, tras treinta y tres años en la máxima competición, anunció su retirada definitiva como jugador profesional, concluyendo una sobresaliente carrera. Seve continua trabajando en el mundo del golf a través de sus empresas Amen Corner, Trajectory y Motivation and Training.
