John McGahern (Dublín, 1934-2006) fue el mayor de siete hermanos, y creció en una granja del oeste de Irlanda. Fue un gran novelista y escritor de cuentos, conocido por su exploración de las relaciones familiares y las complejidades de la vida rural en la Irlanda del siglo XX. Su obra refleja la tensión entre la vida tradicional y los cambios sociales de la modernidad. Entre todas las mujeres le otorgó gran reconocimiento internacional al ser nominada para el Booker Prize de 1990, el año de su primera publicación. Escribió otras muchas obras, entre las que destacan La oscuridad o The Barracks. A su muerte en 2006, The Guardian se refirió a él como «el novelista irlandés más importante desde Samuel Beckett».
