Vienna, 1934. Stefan is a successful author - widely read, universally admired, and translated into every language. His is the life of the wealthy playboy, enjoying only the finest luxuries, the toast of cultured European society. Only two things cloud his prospects: the rise of the Nazi Party, and the sudden appearance of a woman who he must know but cannot for the life of him remember.

Christopher Hamptons adaptation of the short story by Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) received its English Language premiere at Hampstead Theatre, London, in June 2024.

Christopher Hampton (Açores, 1946) és un dels dramaturgs britànics de més èxit. Ha escrit adaptacions per al cinema, com Les amistats perilloses (1988) o Expiació (2007), i entre les seves obres teatrals destaquen els títols: Eclipsi total (1967), El filantrop (1969) o Salvatges (1974). Entre les diverses col·laboracions que ha dut a terme en el món del cinema, també ha fet de director dels seus guions Carrington (1995) o Imaginant Argentina (2003). Ha traduït autors com Yasmina Reza o Ödön von Horváth, autor que ha convertit en personatge a Contes de Hollywood. Rosanna Rion és professora de traducció a la Universitat de Barcelona i ha traduït obres teatrals d'autors clàssics com Sheridan o Goldoni, comtambé d'altres de contemporanis, com Janusz Glowacki.
